Proficiency in English is acknowledged to be an essential requirement in a multilingual Nation like India, for communication at national as well as international levels. The present system of higher education, however, does not fully equip the advanced student for entry into the job market after securing the B.A. degree.
With this in mind, the UGC has introduced Communicative English Major in Select Colleges at degree level. The course is oriented towards acquisition of English language skills, both written and oral which enables the learner to function effectively in the real world. Along with language learning, the course also has a practical element of “on the job training” hopefully which, will prepare the learner to be absorbed into the job market. The course is offered to a limited number of students and concentrates on individual needs and abilities. It is an intensive course of three years’ duration . On completion, the student will be awarded a BA Degree with a Major in Communicative English.
This Vocational Course has been introduced in Jogamaya Devi College. Students willing to join this course will have to take Communicative English as a Major subject, along with English (General) and Political Science (General).
Students of this course have trained in reputed city hospitals and banks, Red FM, Starmark and other organizations. The students are also required to put in a month of practice teaching of Conversational English to individual students or groups in Spoken English Centres. Valuable exposure to the functioning of media houses is also given to them through visits to Radio and TV stations such as Akashbani Bhavan and studios of ’24-Ghanta’.The students of the department are well placed in renowned organizations such as HSBC and HDFC Banks, Tanishq, Crossword, Zevar, TCS, Delhi Public School, Megacity, ITC Sonar, Desun Hospital, Veta, The Park and R-Plus.
